Health & Wealth: 4 Tips to Maintain Both In the city Ahhh, life in the big city. Countless restaurants, theaters, museums, historical monuments, shopping, social activities, and countless other opportunities right at your finger tips. An urban environment is the perfect place setting for diversity and energy, ideal for those who fancy the non-stop lifestyle. But, as with all things good, the big city has its setbacks. The correlation between the size of the city and the size of the prices in that city is not difficult to notice. With basic necessities making a bigger dent in your wallet, one needs to be more cautious when shopping and determining priorities on the infamous shopping list. It seems that health falls to the backburner with personal budget cuts because it doesn't provide instant gratification in comparison to something like hygiene or home maintenance. Aside from prices, the boost in opportunities and social events, specifically restaurants and bars, makes city-livers more vulnerable to falling off of the fitness track. Not to mention, they have the challenge of finding an affordable gym membership. Although these roadblocks sound grim when trying to achieve a certain level of fitness and well-being, it all comes down to how one utilizes what is presented to them, and with these 3 basic tips, your health will climb right back up your priority ladder. 1. Hit the Streets for Exercise One of my biggest challenges working out at a gym is boredom. The televisions are usually set to channels that I would go out my way to NOT watch, and people watching loses its appeal when everyone looks sweaty and unhappy. Where does that leave me? Skimming through magazines that are usually missing the interesting pages because someone has already ripped them out or staring off into elliptical space. Let's just say it's not on my favorite things to do list. So, when the weather permits, I do my best to escape the gym and see the city. With the constant hustle and bustle of city-goers and architectural changes, you'll keep your interest while still meeting your fitness goals via a decent run, walk or bike ride. Plus, you can turn people dodging into a game, which makes it even more enjoyable! : ) If you're a visual personal like me, than the scenery changes will be of motivation as the constant transitions will capture your interest. Plus, most major cities are on a body of water, which will provide some serenity to accompany all of those endorphins you'll acquire. To help monitor levels of fitness on your own, cheap and easy-to-use products like this
calorie pedometer
or
Body Fat Analyzer
will help you track your progress. When taking advantage of outdoor exercise, you can eliminate the cost of a gym membership. And if your city undergoes every season, then you can consider getting a month-by-month plan or turn your focus to classes offered at various gyms for variety. Exercising outdoors may be a small cost reduction, but it can help stimulate your interest in exercising while providing an intimate experience for you and the city you love! 2. Create Your Own Home Gym A gym membership does have its perks. You have complete access to tons of equipment, along with basic gear like fitness balls and exercise mats, but unfortunately, I've never found myself taking advantage of the gear. Maybe it is the sanitary factor or my tendency to exercise very unconventionally, but I don't feel comfortable twisting and turning on the ground where ripped gym rats can see me struggling with a ball. I know, I know, it shouldn't matter what anyone thinks because I'm there for myself, but I would prefer to get down and dirty in the comfort of my own home, and luckily, it is pretty inexpensive to do so! In the gear section at
Americas Nutrition
products range from medicine balls to yoga gear to resistance tubes to almost everything else you can imagine. By purchasing your own, you can tailor your gear selection entirely to yourself, and you will only have your own germs to worry about. When considering the long-term use that accompanies these products, price is very minimal. And with the wide range of fitness DVD's and how-to videos on the market and Internet respectively, optimizing your gear and workouts should be simple as pie. It is a one-time purchase that can carry you to your fitness goals. 3. Turn to the Internet for Your Supplement Needs I try to stay away from all of those miracle weight loss supplements and products with supplement facts that sound like they're in another language, but I do have a basic supplement list I take to polish up my health efforts, including Omega 3 and protein. With the new fitness wave, supplements are becoming more and more accessible at stores nation-wide. But as mentioned, those inner city prices are inflated, supplements included. Luckily with our technology age, online shopping has become a major industry. Not only is price comparison instant, but most online retailers are much cheaper and tend to be immune from location-related price inflation. With that being said, purchasing your supplement needs online can help save you some major bucks. Products like
Omega 3 Fish Oil
or
100% Soy Protein
are both very inexpensive, and shipping is less than $5. And with most online retailers, free shipping can be acquired with bigger purchases, and bigger purchases can mean quantity discounts. As most products expire 1-2 years or more after the purchase date, one can plan supplement purchases that will last them the year, while also gaining maximum discount. 4. Make Healthy Eating Portable Restaurants, restaurants, restaurants. Oh, how they always look so charming and smell so delicious! The convenience and fun attached to trying new restaurants or going back to the ones you love is really difficult to resist in a big city environment. There are so many choices and cost tends to be disregarded when focusing on how much one enjoys the new tastes and experiences. Lunch breaks fall to the lure of the tasty options on the street, and eating healthy gets lost in the clutter. So how does one avoid temptation when all of these restaurant signs and advertisements are pounding at the door of your taste buds? Make tasty, healthy eating portable. If you're anything like me, then processed 'under 300 calorie' frozen lunches don't cut it for you. I prefer to eat fresh produce and natural, homemade food, but transporting these foods, and the taste, can be very difficult. Pre-make a salad equipped with the fixings and you'll have soggy lettuce by lunch time. Cut up an apple and some celery in the morning and you’ll have a case of produce abuse with all of the bruises they’ll develop by the time you’re actually ready to munch. And don’t forget the additional container you’ll need to lug around for peanut butter. Your lunch break should be full of flavor, not disappointment & struggle, which is why efficient portability is key and Vita minder is here to save the day! With products like the
Salad Pod
,
Fruit & Veggie Bowl
, and the
Deluxe Lunch Chiller
packing the foods you love will no longer be a struggle. And with the foods you prefer right at your finger tips, staying in on your lunch break will come as naturally as your food while allowing you to save money by bringing your own lunch. So these tips may be basic, but it is always the simple things that add up and make the biggest differences. Big city fitness doesn't have to cost big city prices, and I hope these tips help you look at your health efforts in a new light.
