Glucosamine Sulfate is an amino acid derivative of glucose. It is an aminomonosaccharide and typically used for the treatment of osteoarthritis. It plays an important role in the formation of connective tissue. Connective tissue is the element which holds the skeleton together and is extremely important for joint maintenance. Glucosamine is naturally present in joint cartilage. It is recommended that 500mg be given three times a day. Adverse effects of glucosamine are minimal. There are reports of gastrointestinal symptoms, drowsiness, headache, and some skin rashes. Although many patients have reported improvement while taking glucosamine for osteoarthritis and for arthritis, more controlled studies need to be done. Many of our patients with Arthritis and joint pain have found glucosamine to be helpful.
